Pianist Jan-Willem Rozenboom is known for his performances of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, but this season he turns his focus to three other great composers for piano: Ludwig van Beethoven, Frédéric Chopin and Sergei Rachmaninov. The most beautiful preludes and sonatas are performed with passion by one of the Netherlands’ finest pianists.
Beethoven’s capriciousness in the “Moonlight” Sonata, Chopin’s lyricism in the “Raindrop” Prelude, and Rachmaninov’s impetuous Romanticism in the prelude nicknamed “The Bells of Moscow.” The program also includes Beethoven’s Rondo Op. 51 No. 1, several preludes, nocturnes and études by Chopin, and preludes by Rachmaninov.
During the concert, Rozenboom speaks about the stories behind the pieces, about the composers, and especially about why these works fascinate him so deeply. At the piano, he demonstrates how these composers approached melody and harmony.
“Rozenboom’s playing is marked by a combination of sobriety and deep respect for the composer.”
